Activities
Things not to be missed in Castelmezzano and surroundings.
The walk in the village up to the ruins of the castle and the "Norman staircase": from Casa del Mago continue left uphill. Always climb up to the castle ruins. There is a beautiful view.
Sentiero delle sette Pietre (7 stons trek). see photo It's an easy path (you can do it without a guide) connecting Castelmezzano to Pietrapertosa, in about 1,5 hours. It depends on how trained you are. To go to the path you must go to the cemetery of Castelmezzano. From there you will find very clear indications. Go down into the valley until you reach a plain (the witch's cave). Go past the Caperrino stream crossing the Roman bridge. From there the path climbs up into the woods to Pietrapertosa. Possible detour: before the climb, immediately after the Roman bridge, there is a detour to the Nepalese bridge and the via ferrata. The path goes along the stream and is very beautiful, even if you do not do the bridge or the railways (you need adequate equipment and preparation). To walk the path back and forth to the Nepalese bridge lasts about an hour. Then go up to Pietrapertosa which is also a very beautiful village. The return is on the same path.

Sentiero dei Giganti (Giants trek) is the most beautiful and panoramic trail of the Lucan Dolomites. (see photo and video) From the village of Castelmezzano to the Cima dell'Uva, passing by Monte Maudoro. This path, with its extraordinary views, will take us into the fantastic world of the stone giants of the Lucan Dolomites, the great sandstone rock formations that characterize this landscape. Sentiero dei Giganti is a slightly more challenging path that you can do yourself if you have the GPS track (write me if you want me to send it to you +393474070271).
Besides Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa you could visit Accettura. You have to get off by car on the Basentana highway, take in the direction of Matera / Metaponto. Exit at the first exit "Pietrapertosa / Campomggiore". Immediately after the exit go towards Accettura. You will climb into a beautiful forest. You are in the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park. After a few km of curves you arrive at the Park headquarters. From here you can continue to Accettura or turn left along a steep slope until you reach the archaeological site of Monte Croccia (read here an interesting article - italian language).
